07/12/11  Christmas Lunch - nineteen members met for Christmas Lunch at the Inn on the Lake.  The weather would have been perfect for a game of croquet but nonetheless members enjoyed the meal and those who were hibernating for the winter season also had an opportunity to catch up with the hardier ones who continue to play in the Winter League.

02/10/11  Triumph in the Longman Club Team Cup 2011 for Guildford & Godalming.  Saturday saw the team of Mark Godfrey (captain), Arthur Lindley, Mike Thompson and Stephen Stuart Matthews defeat Ealing in the semi-final at Surbiton.  This was the second time the club had reached the final and on Sunday the same team met Nottingham.  At lunchtime Guildford & Godalming were 2-1 down but tension rose as the teams came level at 3-3 later in the afternoon with just one game to complete.  It was a nail biting time as scores in this last game were level as time was called. All eyes were on the players, the captain telephoned a running commentary back to the club as in the closing moments Mike Thompson clinched matters winning the game on the ‘golden hoop’. Congratulations to the team on winning our first national competition and also to Andrew Fewster, Robert Bateson and Ian Fugeman who played in the earlier rounds which enabled the club to reach the semi-finals.

25/09/11  Twenty members turned out for the End of Season Golf Croquet Competition.  Members played as many games as possible and there was fierce but friendly competition throughout the day, spiced by the mystery of the formula the manager was applying to determine the outcome.  Andrea Huxley was the clear winner whilst Barry Gould won the prize for the most games played.  Congratulations to Andrea and thanks to Mark Godfrey who devised and managed the competition.

20/09/11  All England Final - Andrew Fewster reports that it was a very enjoyable tournament despite some awful weather at times. He won some and lost some and comments that he had some close games that could have gone either way.  Handicaps ranged from 0 to 20, and the youngest competitor (the winner) was a 14 year old on a handicap of 14.

11/09/11  Ian Fugeman retained the Chapman Challenge Cup at this weekend’s Intermediate/High Bisquers’ Tournament.  Following the ‘all play all format’ there was a tie between Ian and Eileen Gallagher resulting in in a final play-off between them.  The result for Ian was +3 on time. Photos....

06/09/11  Mike H reports .... the Golf Croquet Handicap squad played their 4th and final match in the SECF Golf Croquet League on Tuesday, 6 September against Woking. Conditions were, to put it mildly, somewhat taxing! A mixture of strong winds and virtually horizontal rain for the first two hours of a three-hour match. Everybody got soaked! The teams were relatively evenly balanced. G & G got off to a good start, winning the two opening doubles, but Woking fought back, winning the round of four singles by 3-1, leaving the match nicely balanced at 3-3 going into the final round of one double and two singles. Time to gird the loins, and G&G duly obliged by making a clean sweep, thus winning the match 6-3.
Summary of our first season in the SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League: Played 4 Won 3 Lost 1
Thanks to the eight people who played in the matches this year – in no particular order, Colin Ellery, Barry Gould, Joan West, Charles Martin, Tony Mrozinski, Mike Thompson, Andrea Huxley and Mike Huxley. We’ll try to involve more players next year.

Congratulations to Andrew on reaching the final at Sidmouth and best wishes for the event on 17 & 18 September.

25/08/11  A surprise ‘cake and champagne’ tea was laid on to celebrate David & Joan’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary.  After torrential rain in the morning the skies cleared to a glorious blue, David & Joan turned up on time for a pre-arranged match and members had the pleasure of raising their glasses in celebration.  Photos....

17/08/11  Once again we had pleasure in hosting the  mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds annual croquet tournament. 18 teams played a total of 78 matches and competition for the cup was close right to the end when team ‘Jack Jones’ aka Barbara won by a hairsbreadth. Competitors and supporters relaxed over a leisurely picnic lunch and best of all the weather stayed fine, if cloudy, throughout the day. Photos....

26/07/11  Mike Huxley reports on our second match in the SECF Golf Croquet League.  ‘Not quite such a good result as our first match. Dogmersfield were our second ever opponents in the SECF Golf Croquet League on 26 July. A very enjoyable match was won by Dogmersfield 5 games to 4 (though G&G actually scored more hoops 49 to 46). A good time was had by all, though.’

The tournament was won by Chris Farthing and so the Godalming and Guildford Crown will grace his trophy cupboard for a further year.  For full details of the tournament follow the link to the CA web site.
